Rhb Ge 6/6 Rhaetian Brown Crocodile by LGB is a Collection Item. Looks and Runs like new. Box and insert are are included. The Rhätische Bahn´s most famous locomotive is the articulated "Crocodile" Ge 6/6 (G = narrow gauge, e = electric, 6/6 = six axles, all powered). Built in the 1920´s, these 1,067-horsepower locos hauled freight and passengers over the steep grades of the of the Swiss Alps. Of the original fifteen, several still serve on special trains like the RhB´s Alpine Classic. Like the prototype, the LGB model is equipped with two motors. It can draw its power from an overhead catenary wire or from the track. The outside frame drive is fully operational. This loco has gold plate head lamp rims.
The Prototype: When a number of Rhätische Bahn (RhB) lines switched from steam to electric traction in the 1920s, the railroad needed powerful new electric locomotives. Between 1921 and 1929, fourteen of the famous Ge 6/6 “Crocodiles” were built. The distinctive front and rear hoods house two electric motors. Power is transmitted from the drive shafts to the wheels through side rods. With a sustained power rating of 1076 hp and a top speed of 55 kph (35 mph), the articulated RhB Crocodiles set a standard for narrow gauge electric locomotives that remained unsurpassed for many years. Several of these classic locomotives remain in service and can be enjoyed in front of special trains.
This set includes:
- High tractive effort with two Bühler 7 pole motors
- Directional reversing lights, three at each end and one in each cab under directional control
- Two working pantographs for power pickup when used with overhead wires
- 3 LED Status Lights in Cab
- There are two 3 position switches in the front cab of the loco (Don't bother with the manual to understand the switches, it will confuse everyone regardless if you read the German or the English translation - it is really quite elegant and simple)
- The top switch controls the lighting power; left is catenary, center = Off, right is track.
- The bottom switch controls the motors power; left is catenary, center is OFF, right is track.
- Simple and easy to use, allowing independent lighting and motor selection of power source.
- This is nice for running the lighting of all electric locos from overhead catenary power while running loco motors from track power so lighting can be always on or always off regardless of track voltage.
- Remember that catenary power has only one wire connection. The other return connection is from one of the rails - contact us for correct wiring when both catenary and track power is used.
